Sergeant Archy Hartin

 

 

Archy Hartin was born on 27 July 1896 in Chapel Square, Coleraine, County Londonderry, the first of five children of house painter Archibald Hartin and his wife Mary (née Wright). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living in Chapel Square with his parents and siblings and working as a painter.

Hartin enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 13 November 1915 (No.1876 – later Corps of Hussars No.71610). His cousin Hugh Hartin joined at the same time.

In January 1918 he embarked for Egypt with a draft of North Irish Horsemen from the regimental reserve depot at Antrim. There he was attached to the 1/1st Nottinghamshire Yeomanry (Sherwood Rangers), serving with that regiment in the Palestine campaign.

On 11 August 1919, following his return to the UK, he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.

Hartin returned to Coleraine, and on 13 February 1920 married Mary Doole at Muckamore Presbyterian Church, County Antrim. He died in Coleraine on 27 August 1980.
